Accessibility Statement
Last Updated: April 5, 2026
Emaho Foundation is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to all people, including those with disabilities. We believe that every person deserves equal access to information about dharma teachings, meditation practices, and our community offerings.
Our Commitment
We strive to meet or exceed the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including:
- Visual impairments (blindness, low vision, color blindness)
- Hearing impairments
- Motor impairments
- Cognitive and learning disabilities
What We Do
To ensure accessibility, we have implemented the following measures:
- Semantic HTML: We use proper heading structures, landmarks, and ARIA attributes to support screen readers and assistive technologies.
- Keyboard Navigation: All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard, including navigation menus, forms, and media controls.
- Skip Navigation: A “Skip to main content” link is provided to bypass repetitive navigation.
- Color Contrast: We maintain sufficient color contrast ratios across all of our deity color themes to ensure text legibility.
- Alternative Text: Images include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked as presentational.
- Responsive Design: The Site is designed to work across devices and screen sizes, including when text is resized up to 200%.
- Focus Indicators: Visible focus indicators are provided for keyboard users navigating interactive elements.
- Automated Testing: We use accessibility linting tools in our development workflow to catch issues early.
Our WCAG 2.1 AA Badge
You may have noticed the WCAG 2.1 AA badge in our footer. This badge represents our commitment to maintaining the highest widely-adopted accessibility standard for web content. Here is how we earn it:
- Automated audits on every deploy: Every time we publish a change to our website, an automated test suite powered by axe-core (the industry-standard accessibility testing engine from Deque Systems) scans our key pages against the full WCAG 2.1 Level A and Level AA success criteria. If any page fails, the deploy is blocked until the issue is resolved.
- Strict linting in development: Our code editor and build pipeline enforce the strictest accessibility rules from eslint-plugin-jsx-a11y. This catches missing alt text, improper ARIA usage, and other issues before code is even committed.
- Accessibility-driven test suite: Our component and integration tests verify accessibility contracts — aria-labels, landmark roles, focus indicators, live regions, and semantic HTML — rather than visual appearance. This ensures accessibility features cannot be accidentally removed during development.
- Continuous improvement: Automated testing catches a significant portion of accessibility issues, but not all. We complement our automated checks with manual testing and welcome feedback from users of assistive technologies to help us improve.
What WCAG 2.1 Level AA Means
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), define three levels of conformance: A (minimum), AA (recommended), and AAA (highest). Level AA is the standard referenced by most accessibility laws worldwide, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the European Accessibility Act. It covers requirements such as:
- Minimum 4.5:1 color contrast ratio for normal text and 3:1 for large text
- All functionality available from a keyboard
- Content reflows properly when zoomed to 200%
- Meaningful headings, labels, and page structure
- Error identification and suggestions in forms
- Consistent navigation across pages
Known Limitations
While we strive for full accessibility, some content may have limitations:
- Some older archival content may not yet meet all accessibility standards. We are working to remediate this content.
- Third-party content or embeds (such as payment processors or video players) may have their own accessibility limitations beyond our direct control.
